Micro-suction is the most widely used method for safe wax removal. It is the same method as used in our hospitals.
Wax Appointment Prep
The common preparation for wax removal is to use olive oil. A spray style applicator is recommended. 5-7 days use, one squirt, twice a day. The same for drops too.
Follow Up Appointments
To complete the treatment with as little risk as possible, may require a second appointment. There is no extra charge, just the safe completion of your care.
Ear Health GP Notification
Micro-suction sometimes reveals a new or an unknown condition in the ear. This might be a perforation of the ear drum or an infection. Your GP can be notified.
Aftercare and Ear Care
There is not a lot of aftercare for wax removal. A couple more days of olive oil use is beneficial. If wax is removed often, use the olive oil regularly.
Micro-Suction Process
A Zoellner tube is used to gently hoover the wax out of the ear, through a hose and into an evacuation bottle. Depending on the consistency, the wax may be lifted from the ear in pieces suctioned to the end of the Zoellner tube. This part of the process can be quite noisy when deeper in the ear canal.
Sometimes wax can be dry or dense and plug-like. Suction may not be working as there is limited power for safety reasons. Hand tools such as Jobson Horns or Cerumen Hooks can help loosen, adjust or remove difficult wax. This part of the process can occasionally be a little uncomfortable.
Light and magnification is essential for clear observation of the procedure. Some patients may need to be repositioned to aid with the delivery of acceptable safety levels.
